November 17th Barcelona & Museums

Today was forecast for some rain and it was really coming down when we woke up but by the time we got out it had cleared up and was slightly overcast.   We had an ‘English Breakfast’ at one of the little restaurants close by and then hit the metro.   Two stops away from us is a metro stop that connects with a funicular train that climbs Montjuic, the headland that is just west of the old town so we got off there and took the train up.  There are two museums up there that we particularly wanted to see.

The Catalan Art Museum, which has a world class collection of Romanesque church murals from small village churches in the Pyrenees, they were collected to keep them from certain destruction or pillage from collectors and non-Spanish museums.   They are pretty spectacular, I got pictures but they can’t convey the impact of these murals.

Then just up the road from this museum is the Fundacion Joan Miro, containing the world’s best collection of this artists work.   Most of what we’ve seen of Miro is from the limited edition prints which are interesting but not very appealing, plus a few years ago there was a large scandal of knockoffs which almost killed the market for his prints.   Anyway seeing his actual originals is a completely different experience and has really changed our view of him and made us believers.

We then went to our favorite restaurant at the back of the large market for dinner; where I had yet another paella and it just knocked me out it was so good.   They used a different sort of rice that was less like Arborio but just as yummy and very fresh seafood.   Deb had a crème of squash soup that had goat cheese and walnuts and it was incredibly good as well.   On the whole food in Barcelona is more expensive than in Madrid, but the quality has been top notch so we have no complaints.
