Deb had white asparagus with house made mayonnaise, both 1st courses were delicious. We both had fish for the second course then dessert all of which cost us 18 euros including wine. Deb had the flan for dessert and says that it’s the best she has tried in Madrid to date. We wanted a brandy to finish our meal, so I went to the bar to look at what might be available. They showed me four possibilities and I chose the one that they told me was the best, I got what I ordered but I’m not sure I know what it was. It tasted like raisans, but more like raisan coolaid, hmm? I wonder if the bartender was watering the bottle to cover a few of his own tastings? I’ll get back to you on this after another test.
Anyway we started walking towards Reina Sofia but realized that our timing was bad so we decided to go to the Royal Naval Museum. It’s located in an active naval facility so we had to show I.D.s and go through a metal detector and xray. Funny thing is they took my pocket knife but the museum is chocked full of exposed swords, pikes, and other tools of war any of which would be more effective than my pocket knife. Still they gave it back to me when we left. It was a fascinating museum going through the chronology of the navy in Spain. Many beautiful models, lots of cannons, a map of the new world from 1500, battle flags, and everything associated with naval life in the Spanish navy.
Old maps, now ur talkin'! I'm still enjoying your adventure from afar. I was very glad to hear about the apt. and see the pics for that. Every day sounds to be full of discoveries. Nice. Have a great trip via rail -- so envious!
